The Center for Humanitarian & Disaster Reduction is a disaster prevention educational facility established to give future generations insights into the experience and lessons learned from the Great Hanshin-Awaji earthquake, as well as promoting future disaster preparation.
The \"1.17 Theater\" on the 4th floor of the West Building utilizes special effects and CG to reproduce the moment the earthquake struck.
All visitors can experience the tremendous earthquake for themselves, with powerfully realistic images and sound.
In addition to the physical impact, damage to timepieces, photos and video materials, as well as dioramas and testimonial records help shed light on the progression from disaster to recovery. Another must-see is the corner educating all-comers on disasters and how to prevent them through experiments, activities, and a screening of a 3D documentary video on the disastrous aftermath following the 2011 Tōhoku Earthquake and Tsunami, providing wide-ranging disaster insights.
