The museum was first opened as the Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art in 1970 to commemorate 100th anniversary of the prefectural government. The museum was the second prefectural museum of contemporary art in Japan and was designed by the distinguished Japanese architect Togo Murano. The museum was re-opened in 2002 as Harada-no-Mori Gallery and provides rental space.
